My entire family, 5 of us, go to Gracie Barra Saddle Rock and we love it. The coaches and professors are superb, the curriculum is well defined and easy to learn, the community is fantastic. We're new to Jiu Jitsu and this school has been nothing short of a blessing to our family.
Ryan Ayres
My whole family (5 of us) have been training here for 3 months now. It’s been a fantastic experience. The community is just without parallel. Everyone has opened their arms and welcomed us unconditionally. One of my sons has autism and the other has a behavior disorder. The coaches and instructors have been so patient and worked with them at their level while still expecting them to drive and improve.
I’m so incredibly thankful for this gym and the community surrounding it.

The best Jiu-Jitsu school in the area by far!! Treat you like family and welcome all with open arms. Gracie Barra saddle Rock is now being featured as the only recommended Jiu-Jitsu school at 24 Hour Fitness Parker x Arapahoe. I highly recommend checking them out!
Arnold
Our five year old and eight year old have both trained here for the past five months. The physical fitness is great for getting their energy out. The bigger benefits are character building and the sense of community. Their confidence and self image have improved in this short time, which is great prevention for bullying! I’m always surprised how quickly my kids listen and how tall they stand in class. Professor Bruno and Coach Matt are excellent teachers, very patient, and encourage self discipline. I highly recommend Gracie Barra Saddle Rock!

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting techniques. It emphasizes leverage, technique, and strategy to overcome opponents of various sizes and strengths.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu suitable for beginners?
Absolutely! Gracie Barra welcomes students of all skill levels, including beginners. Our classes are designed to cater to individuals with no prior experience in BJJ. Our instructors provide comprehensive instruction and support to help beginners learn and progress at their own pace.
No, you do not need to be in peak physical condition to begin training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. BJJ itself is a great way to improve your fitness level. Our classes are structured to accommodate different fitness levels, and our instructors will help you gradually develop strength, endurance, and flexibility.
Yes! Many Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academies offer specialized programs for children. BJJ can benefit children by teaching them discipline, self-confidence, respect, and practical self-defense skills in a safe and controlled environment.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is highly effective for self-defense because it focuses on ground fighting, where many real-life altercations end up. BJJ techniques allow individuals to neutralize and control opponents without relying on size or strength, making it suitable for individuals of all ages and body types.
While it's common for BJJ academies to provide loaner or rental equipment for beginners, you will eventually need to invest in a few essential items. These typically include a BJJ gi (uniform), a mouthguard, and protective gear like knee pads or rash guards. Your academy can guide you on the specific requirements.
The frequency of training can vary depending on individual goals and availability. For beginners, it's recommended to start with a few classes per week to build a solid foundation. As you progress, you can gradually increase training frequency. Consistency is key, so aim for a balance that fits your schedule and allows for recovery.
Yes, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu utilizes a belt ranking system to signify a practitioner's progress and skill level. The traditional belt colors are white, blue, purple, brown, and black. Each belt requires a certain level of proficiency, time in training, and demonstration of technique and knowledge. Advancement in belt rank is typically determined through regular evaluations conducted by qualified instructors.

This week, we focus on Week 15 of our curriculum, tailored for ages 3-4, ages 5-6, ages 7-9, ages 10-13 and up! The structured programs are designed to instill confidence, discipline, and foundational skills in our young martial artists.
Word of The Week: Team
In jiu-jitsu, the concept of a team is vital as it encompasses the community of practitioners who train, support, and learn from each other. Although jiu-jitsu can be practiced individually, progress is heavily reliant on partners for drilling techniques, sparring, and providing feedback. A strong team environment encourages mutual respect, camaraderie, and collective growth.
Ground Technique: 1 Arm Under Guard Pass
This week, Tiny Champions will be introduced to various break fall techniques. These techniques are essential for ensuring safety during falls, helping our youngest students learn how to protect themselves from injury. Through guided practice, they will build confidence in their ability to fall safely.
Ground techniques form the core of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and this week, our Tiny Champions will focus on the “1 Arm Under Guard Pass.” This move teaches them how to navigate an opponent’s guard effectively. It is a fundamental skill that builds their understanding of control and movement on the ground.
Self Defense: Headlock Escape 2
For our Little Champions 2 & Juniors, self-defense training this week will cover the “Headlock Escape 2: Catch the Head.” This technique is crucial for escaping from headlocks, a common hold that children might encounter. The focus will be on teaching them how to safely and effectively free themselves from this position.
Stand Up Technique: Single Leg Takedown with Grips
The stand-up technique for this week is the “Single Leg Takedown with Grips.” This move is fundamental for transitioning from standing to a dominant position on the ground. Students will learn the importance of grips and leverage to execute this takedown efficiently.
Ground techniques will center around guard passing, with the instructor selecting specific drills to enhance the students’ skills. This personalized approach allows for addressing the unique needs and progress of each student, ensuring a well-rounded understanding of guard passing strategies.
In Class A, students will learn how to block a front kick and execute an elbow strike. This combination is crucial for neutralizing an opponent’s attack and creating an opportunity for a counter-strike. By practicing these techniques, students enhance their ability to defend themselves in real-life scenarios.
In Class B, the focus will be on blocking a high round kick, followed by an inside hook takedown and a straight footlock. This sequence helps in transitioning from a standing defense to a dominant position on the ground.
Class A will cover opening the guard while standing up with two hands on the pants, followed by the leg drag guard pass. These techniques are essential for maintaining control and advancing positions in Jiu-Jitsu.
Class B will include opening the guard on the knees with both hands on the pants, and the two arms under the leg guard pass on the knees. These methods provide alternatives for breaking an opponent’s guard and achieving a superior position.
Class A will focus on the “Drop Double,” a powerful takedown technique that involves grabbing the opponent’s legs and driving them to the mat. This technique is fundamental in wrestling and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu.
Class B will cover the “Outside Single,” another effective leg grab technique. This move is versatile and can be used to transition smoothly into various ground position.
Class A will teach the Kimura escapes and triangle escapes. These techniques are vital for defending against submissions and reversing positions during a match.
Class B will concentrate on guillotine escapes from both closed guard and open guard. Mastering these escapes allows practitioners to avoid one of the most common and dangerous submissions in No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu
Thank you for checking out our Weekly Breakdown or Week 15! We look forward to seeing you on the mats and helping you develop both your physical and mental strength through jiu-jitsu. Let’s make this week a great one!
See you at the academy!
